Catalytic converter theft

Catalytic converter theft: what you need to know

The theft of catalytic converters from cars isn’t a new crime, but it has increased significantly in 2019.

Police forces around the UK, including those in West Yorkshire, London and Nottinghamshire, are advising owners of any car fitted with a catalytic converter to take precautions.

Any car fitted with a catalytic converter within the exhaust system could be at risk. In the case of Lexus, we are aware that second-generation Lexus RX 400h models (2005-2008) have been a target for thieves.

Below we’ve gathered the best advice for Lexus owners who may be concerned.

What is a catalytic converter?

The catalytic converter is part of the car’s emissions control system. It cleans up the exhaust gases before they are expelled from the car through the exhaust pipe. Its internal elements react with the gases, breaking them down into less harmful substances and water vapour. All cars sold in Europe since 1993 have had to be fitted with catalytic converter by law.

Why are they a target for thieves?

The police are best placed to offer advice on the motivation behind crimes. But we understand that the recycling value of catalytic converters is the primary attraction to thieves because it contains precious metals such as rhodium, platinum and palladium.

What is Lexus doing to stop its cars being targeted?

We’re doing all we can. We’ve shared police guidance with customers, and are seeking technical solutions, although for obvious reasons we would like to refrain from talking about specifics.

We are also working with the police, as well as talking to government about changes in the law around scrap metal sales that would make it harder for criminals to sell stolen catalysts for cash.

However, these are criminal operations and our scope is therefore limited. A number of police forces are taking action and some forces, such as Nottinghamshire, are also starting awareness campaigns. It is vitally important for anyone who is a victim of this crime to report it to their local police force as quickly as possible.

In the main it remains older cars that are targeted because advances in efficiency and technology mean the latest generations of Toyota catalytic converters contain vastly lower amounts of precious metals, whilst still doing their job just as well or even better; this means their value for recycling is very low and they are not attractive to thieves.

How much does it cost to replace a catalytic converter?

Our priority is to do all we can to support Lexus customers who have been the victims of catalytic converter theft.

We have reduced the prices of catalytic converters to a level where Lexus UK does not make any profit from their supply to.

Our reduced price for the installation of a new catalytic converter for the second-generation Lexus RX 400h is now £750 including VAT and fitting. Your nearest Lexus centre can advise on any additional repair costs after inspecting your vehicle.

How long will I have to wait for replacement parts?

The rapid rise in this crime is one we could not have envisaged set against many years of low incidence of thefts. It has impacted our ability to source a sufficient quantity of replacement parts, for which we sincerely apologise.

However, we are taking urgent action with our suppliers to secure increased supplies, which we hope will allow us to effectively tackle the supply issue and repair customers’ cars more quickly.

Who can I contact if I’m worried about my Lexus?

We recommend using our locator tool to find your nearest Lexus centre and contact them to discuss the next steps for your car.

    1. Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We can’t recommend unofficial Lexus products, however we are urgently looking into other technical possibilities. We would like to refrain from confirming specifics of this at this time.

      Thanks.

      1. My Catalytic Converter was stolen last night from my Rx400. Lexus must seriously do more to inform and have a solution to help us as owners/victims. Doing our bit for the environment isn’t helping us? No replacement part for weeks/months. Come on Lexus, what are you doing?

        1. Hi Julia,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are extremely sorry you have been a victim of this crime. We will email you directly in order to put you in touch with our customer relations team.

          Thanks.

          1. Hi, mine got stolen in september and had mine replaced today at woodford lexus. I was changed £798 for replacing this inspite of your statement above that you are getting this done for customers for £750 including fitting and VAT.

          2. Hi there,

Thanks for your message. We are so sorry you have been impacted by this crime. Please be aware that costs may vary depending on the extent of any damage that may have been caused as the catalytic converter was removed. We will email you directly regarding putting you in touch with our customer relations team in case you would like to discuss your situation further.

            Thanks.

        2. Julia I am in the same boat as you and have had mine stolen this week from my Rh400 and been told Lexus can’t supply the part until February! They have my details which they use regularly for mail shots so why they couldn’t have tried to alert owners if this model has been identified as a target is beyond me.

          1. Hi Lucy.

We are so sorry your car has been targeted by thieves. We are working hard to support all our customers who have been impacted by this, and we will email you directly in order to discuss the specifics of your case further.

            Thanks.

        3. My Catalytic Converter was stolen Today morning or last night from my Rx400h 2008 model . I am completely confused and extremely frustrated on what to do. What a waste of money to just put it back to have it stolen.
What alternative can you recommend and is there a temporary arrangement I can live with.
Makes me feel so vulnerable that inspite of having cctv and alarms they have a nerve to steal and have read can do it in less than 3 mins.

          1. Hi there,

Thanks for contacting us. We are deeply sorry you have been impacted by this crime. We will email you directly in order to gain additional details and put you in touch with our customer relations team. Our team are best placed to answer and queries you may have and discuss how we can help you further.

            Thanks.

      2. Can you please update us on the cat lock situation? You claim to have been urgently looking into other technical possibilities two months ago. Mine was stolen on Friday and it is ridiculous to not have any advise for helping Lexus owners prevent such thefts. We all know once we fit a new cat it is highly likely to be stolen again. How can you help us prevent these thefts???

        1. Hi Rory,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are so sorry you have been a victim of this crime. Our customer relations team are best placed to discuss your queries in more detail and we will email you directly in order to open a case on your behalf.

          Thanks.

      3. The catalytic converter has just been stolen from my Lexus RX400h 2006 from a busy London street with good lighting. I rang my local Lexus garage who have said that it will cost at least £1300 to repair not the £750 incl VAT mentioned above as they say there is normally other damage around the converter.

        1. Hi Tiffany,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are so sorry you have been impacted by this crime. Our customer relations team are working to support all our customers who have been a victim of this crime and we will email you directly in order to open a case on your behalf.

          Thanks.

    2. I’ve had a new cat fitted and today am having an official Lexus approved catloc fitted. Will blog again to say how it went.

  1. Are there any locks you could fit to avoid further theft? Lexus has known about this problem for years and never did anything to inform car owners of the potential risk. This was never mentioned to me when I bought the car. Very disappointing!

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are currently working on technical possibilities for our range of models. However, we can’t recommend unofficial Lexus products.

We have only seen a major rise in this crime since summer this year, which may have been why it wasn’t mentioned to you.

      Thanks.

      1. Mine got replaced today and I paid almost £800 from my pocket (as insurance guys said there may be a delay of 3 months. I am now worried that without any assurance that this has been secured from any further theft, it is still a huge risk. I was planning to upgrade mine and this has not put me off completely…..

  2. Following a basic level check of the underside of an IS300h Advance, it appears the catalytic convertor on this model is part of the manifold assembly and located up inside the engine bay area. The whole cat and pipe above is therefore under the bonnet and inaccessible from the underside of the vehicle for unauthorised cutting or removal. It would be beneficial for both Lexus and consumers if Lexus could confirm both this and for other models with similar “safe” cat location. This is so potential purchasers know the cat is safe for a given model and therefore are not dissuaded from choosing Lexus versus another brand of vehicle.

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for you message and apologies for our delayed response. In theory any car with a catalytic converter is at risk of theft. Criminals are using high-grade power saws to remove the catalyst, so in reality they are as easy to remove from any vehicle. The design of the car is less relevant.

      Thanks.

  3. Yes, I have a comment. With reference to an RX400h (2008).

Given that you can’t get hold of a cat for two months (feedback from Sidcup, along with go elsewhere to get it sorted), we are left having to sort this out using after market parts. As much as your offer is a good response, we need cars on the road today, not in two months.

What you could do to make it a bit easier for us, is to provide more details about what we have to source to get our cars on the road; that is, is it just a cat, or is it a cat and an o2 sensor. For example, we know that they cut either side of the cat leaving a gap of around 14 inches. Cats are easy to get hold of but there is a mix of commentary about whether there is an o2 sensor either just before or just after the cat that gets stolen at the same time – few of us know because few of us ever really looked under our cars. We all need to know this because it is pointless us buying after market cats if when we get them, there is some fault because an o2 sensor is needed.

The best thing you could do is to provide a clear diagram showing the exhaust set-up along with parts (including an o2 sensors) so that we can compare the diagram to our own situation.

If you could do that, given we need our cars on the road, I would appreciate it and so would many others.

    1. Hi Michael,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. Our customer relations team will be best placed to help you further with this query. With this in mind we will email you directly in order to gain additional details so our team can best advise you on this.

      Thanks.

  4. Was there a suggested way forward with this? My Lexus RX400 has just been (for a way of putting it) de-catted and I’d like to know what most people have done and what Lexus are suggesting?
Can I ask why platinum and paladium was used? With a bit of foresight, this was inevitable that scummy people would be doing this. Why not gold wing mirrors too?
I’m fuming and whilst I totally cannot blame you for the thieving low lives doing this, Lexus should be accepting some responsibility for this as it is the equivalent of a design flaw. Maybe recalls for less “sought after” cats to be installed?

    1. Hi Dean,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are incredibly sorry you have been a victim of this crime. We will email you directly in order to open a customer relations case on your behalf. Our team are working to support all our customers who have been impacted by this crime and are best placed to discuss your queries in more detail with you.

      Thanks.

  5. Our cat converter was stolen one month ago and we are very frustrated that Lexus hasn’t been helpful with our enquiry. They never get back to us despite their promises and we’re still waiting for the spare part (which they said it’s been ordered !) we have no car and are paying road tax and insurance. They don’t provide a curtesy car either. Very very disappointed.

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are incredibly sorry you have been a victim of this crime. We will email you directly in order to gain additional details to help you further.

      Thanks.

  6. We ended up buying a cat from Catman. It is not a Lexus one but is legit and passes the emissions test. Because it doesn’t have all the stuff that the thieves want there is a good chance it won’t get stolen again. Total cost including fitting by local garage was £400.
Lexus do it for £750 if you want authentic cat.
We have not been able to find a cat lock to fit the Lexus 400 which is something I feel Lexus should look at doing.

    1. Once a thief is under the car with his tools he is not going to care if it is genuine or not. They all have the same valuable metals.

  7. We also have the same problem where the catalytic converter was stolen. Now having to pay for a hire car and still no news as to when replacement cats will be available. Today heard from Lexus that it could be next year but no real help or advice

    1. Hi Naomi,

Thanks for your message. We can only apologise for the distress that may have been caused from this. We will email you top gain additional details and put you in touch with our customer relations team.

      Thanks.

  8. Hi
There is a problem with lexus rx450h?
They still using expensive material to produce the catalyst?? Thank you
    Maryo

  9. My cat was stolen in broad daylight a couple of weeks ago (got them on cctv). According to my insurance company the spare part will not be here till mid-January at the earliest. My chief concern now is what I do once it has been replaced. Wait around till they come and take it away again (which they will, to be sure)? My car is effectively useless and possibly unsaleable (except to someone far away from London). So what can you advise us Lexus? BTW my local dealer hadn’t known about the £750 offer above and I had to email him the link! My car has been the most comfortable and reliable car I have ever owned in decades of driving and owning cars. I love it but am at a loss. Please help us.

    1. Hi Martin,

Thanks for contacting us. We are so sorry your car has been targeted by criminals. We will email you directly in order to put you in touch with our customer relations team who will be able to support you further.

      Thanks.

    2. I am in exactly the same position. We have waited over a month for a new cat converter from Lexus but what’s the point as the inevitability of it being stolen again is close to 100% and whichever way you park the car it is so easy to get too.
Lexus please reach out and give me some advice/reassurance etc

      1. Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are sorry you have been a victim of this crime and that you have been waiting so long for a replacement. Our customer relations team are able to track replacement parts and as such, we would like to open a case on your behalf. We will email you directly regarding this.

        Thanks.

  10. Just had our cat cut out in broad daylight at Aylesbury aqua vale swimming pool while taking our 2yr old granddaughter swimming. So so upsetting! We have a 2008 RX400h. Do the cats have a serial number stamped on them which I can add to the police report?
How long is the delay in getting a replacement?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Adrian,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are so sorry for the distress this situation has caused you and your family. In order to answer your query, we will need to gain some additional details from you and put you in touch with our customer relations team who are working to support all our customer impacted by this crime. We will email you directly regarding this.

      Thanks.

  11. I have a 2008 RX 400h and I have had my catalytic converter stolen twice now, the second time the stole it within 4 days of it being returned to me by Lexus. Does anyone know how to stop these Son’s Of Bi*%H!@ what can I buy?

    1. Hi there,

Thank you for getting in touch. We are incredibly sorry you have been a victim of this crime. We will email you directly in order to put you in touch with our customer relations team who will be able to support you further.

      Thanks.

    2. This is terrible to read. I had mine stolen 2 weeks ago and if it gets repairs I will be selling the car immediately. Surely Lexus can come up with a way to prevent these thefts when the stolen part is replaced. I love my old Lexus but I will have to sell it as I cannot go through another theft.

  12. My cat was stolen between last night and early hours this morning! I took it to Lexus and was told to take it to a garage and get them to weld a pipe to dampen the noise. Oh and also said that they have no cats until February 2020 at a push and it will cost £700. I feel disappointed that these low lifes have stolen something that I feel will only be sold back to me (via Ebay or other party) at double the price! I am disturbed that the alarm did not go off! I managed to get it to a garage and they have done a temporary fix but again this has cost me as not even the garage could order any cats because they are in such demand.

    1. Hi there,

Thank you for contacting us. We are incredibly sorry you have been a victim of this crime and for the distress this may have caused. We will email you directly in order to gain additional details and open customer relations case on your behalf.

      Thanks.

  13. My Cat has been removed today. Car has been parked on my driveway .Hope Lexus will rush with help. But currently I could not see any solution than have custom build lock

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for contacting us. We are so sorry you have been a victim of this crime. We will email you directly in order to discuss your situation further and put you in touch with our customer relations team.

      Thanks.

  14. My 2009 Lexus RX400H had its cat convertor stolen on 13/09/19. As of 12/11/19, I am still waiting on the garage used by my insurance company to source a replacement. Can you let me know what my options are regarding sourcing a replacement cat convertor are and protecting it from another theft ?

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch with us about this situation. We are so sorry to hear about this and we will contact you directly in order to put you in touch with our customer relations team.

      Thanks.

  15. Hi, Just had the catalytic converter stolen from my RX400. There is a 2 month wait for a Lexus part or a 10 day wait for a non-genuine part. Luckily I have a courtesy car through my car insurance but I am not sure about which option to take as I am not an expert on catalytic converters! Can you please advise what you would recommend

    Appreciate the help
    Chris

    1. Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We are so sorry you have been a victim of this crime. Our customer relations team will be able to support you further with this and we will contact you directly regarding this.

      Thanks.

  16. I too had my catalytic converter stolen 2 weeks ago. I asked a question about which makes of Lexus RX hybrid that are not vulnerable to these thefts. I have not had a response. So much for customer service. May be I am better off looking elsewhere for a replacement car. My RX IS 2007. I await a response please.

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We are so sorry you have been a victim of this crime, and we are also sorry if you haven’t been responded to. Regarding your question, in theory any car with a catalytic converter is at risk of theft.

Our customer relations team are working to support all our customers who have been impacted by this and with that in mind we will email you directly in order to open a case on your behalf.

      Thanks.

  17. I have an RX400h 2006 and the Catalytic Converter was stolen at the end of last month. Luckily, as a good will gesture my insurance have covered the cost of a replacement, but as of today’s date I am driving a hire car. In all honesty, i dont really want the Lexus back now as I’m 100% certain that it’s going to get stolen again! It’s giving me anxiety just thinking about the prospect. My husband had parked it outside my daughters gymnastics club – only to find that when they returned that the Cat had been stolen. Those thieving monsters left my husband and young daughter stranded!
Little did they know thought that the gym had security camera’s and caught them on camera 🙂

I just spoke to the repair garage and asked them to replace it with a catalytic converter that doesn’t contain the desired metals and they told me that the insurance company wont reimburse them for the cost and that the best that they can advise is for me to call Lexus so that they can supply a lockable cover – but after reading the comments above, I can see that that is obviously not true.

If Lexus could please contact me to let me know what alternative there is available to the lockable cover i would really appreciate it.

    Many thanks

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are incredibly sorry you have been a victim of this crime and for the distress this may have caused your family. We will email you directly in order to put you in touch with our customer relations team who will be best placed to help with your queries.

      Thanks.

      1. Is there a lock available and would it make a difference? Why not give answers to some of these questions online so the rest of the Lexus user community can benefit? Which models and what year cars have been targeted the most? What other precautions can one take – for example park the car in a certain way – say against a wall front facing etc – to make it difficult for the thieves to steal the Cat converters. What other car makes are targeted?

        1. Hi Dipak,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We are directing customers to our customer relations team as they are assessing each case on an individual basis in order to provide the best support we can. We don’t currently have a Catloc available, however please be aware are urgently looking into other technical possibilities.

In theory, any hybrid car with a catalytic converter is at risk of theft, particularly as criminals are using high-grade power tools to remove them. For further advice on how to protect your car, at the beginning of this blog post we have linked in Police advice on precautions that can be taken when parking your car.

          Thanks.

  18. The catalytic converter was stolen from my RX400H last night in a car park. I’m reading on here that this is been going on for a long time now and Lexus did not think to make this more known to Lexus drivers. This is very disappointing as I always receive leaflets to come and upgrade my car. Can you please advise on the time it’s taken to get the converter from Lexus.

    1. Hi Christiana,

Thank you for getting in touch. We are deeply sorry you have been impacted by this crime. We will email you directly in order to gain additional details of your situation and open a customer relations team on your behalf. our team will be best placed to advise you further.

      Thanks.

  19. I have just read this thread of comments after ours was stolen last week. We have logged a job at Lexus to repair, but I am very concerned that it will happen again. We only bought the car 2 months ago and if we had known about this problem we would not have purchased it. I am very upset that Lexus do not appear to be being proactive regarding possible solutions or even warnings to customers…your technical teams must have some ideas about what can be done. Your customers are buying cars in good faith and being left out of pocket through no fault of their own.

    This is terrible.

    1. Hi Michelle,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We are so sorry you have been impacted by this crime. Please be aware we are doing all we can to support our customers who have been impacted by this. We will email you directly to gain additional details and put you in touch with our customer relations team as they will be able to help you further and answer any queries you may have.

      Thanks.

  20. Our catalytic converter was stolen from our 2006 RX400h outside our house in Sept. and we are still in a rental car. I too am afraid once we get the car back it will be stolen again! Please, can we have a locking device from Lexus? Judy

    1. Hi Judy,

Thanks for your message. We are incredibly sorry you have been impacted by this crime and for the distress this may have caused. Our customer relations team will be able to support you further, and we will email you directly in order to open a case on your behalf.

      Thanks.

  21. My cat was stolen from our drive 2 days ago. I’ve already been warned it might take a month or longer to get a replacement. Why is this crime a particular issue with older Lexus models? Why has Lexus not developed some mechanism to help protect customers from future theft as clearly it appears this could happen repeatedly? Why is the only response from Lexus basically we’ll email you directly?

    1. Hi Cynthia,

Thanks for getting in touch. We are so sorry you have been a victim of this crime. Our customer relations team are in the best position to support you in any way we can during this incredibly difficult situation and as a result, we would like to put you in touch with them and will email you directly regarding this.

      Thanks.

  22. Don’t believe the Lexus “reduced” price above. I have just been told on the phone that the fixed price is £900. That is £750 for the catalytic converter and £150 for “clips and springs and stuff”! There may be additional cost if the thieves damaged anything else.

And I’m told there is neither stock available nor a delivery date for new stock. The best Lexus can do is put me on a waiting list to be contacted as and when they have a delivery date and then to wait for the actual delivery and an appointment for installation.

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for contacting us about this. We are so sorry you have been a victim of this crime. You are right that costs may vary depending on the extent of any damage to your vehicle. Our customer relations team are able to track replacement parts and we will email you directly in order to put you in touch with a case manager.

      Thanks.

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for your message. We are sorry to hear you have been a victim of this crime. Our customer relations team will be able to help you further and we will email you directly in order to open a case on your behalf.

      Thanks.

  23. My elderly father has fallen victim to the same crime.

I do not accept that all C.C s are a target.

I think Lexus should at least contact everyone on the DVLA database with the vulnerable models.

Until it happens to them ,owners may not be aware that they have to be vigilant.

We have installed security measures at my fathers property to deter the thieves from taking the new one when it finally arrives but I doubt it will stop them.

I have looked at the design of any such C.C lock on the market and they look ridiculously flimsy.
Any help would be appreciated ..

    1. Hi Steve,

Thanks for getting in touch with us about this. We are so sorry to hear your father has been impacted by this crime and for the distress this may have caused. Would you like to discuss his case further with our customer relations team?

      Thanks.

  24. Got my one stolen last night.
Right in front of my garage on drive.
Can not blame Lexus for their brilliant cars. Because if you want to drive quality, safety car it has to be build from quality expensive materials.
Can only blame police and government. They do nothing to stop this crime.
The most popular answer from police is “contact your insurance”.
They don’t care I still have to pay my excess and deal with the claim for the next couple of years.
What to say to Lexus. Arrange more catholic convertes for future. So your customers do not wait until the next year.

    1. Hi Anton,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We are incredibly sorry to hear you have been a victim of this crime. We would like to help you further by putting you in touch with our customer relations team and will email you directly regarding this.

      Thanks.

  25. I had ours sawn off from our 2007 RX400 last Saturday at a tescos car park. Witnesses gave a description but police aren’t investigating further. Even when we get it back o no longer feel safe to use it as it seems inevitable it will happen again.

    1. Hi Nicky,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We are sorry you have been a victim of this crime and for the distress this may have caused. We will email you directly in order to put you in touch with our customer relations team who will be able to discuss your case in more detail.

      Thanks.

  26. The catalytic converter on my ct200h was stolen last night from my work car park. I can’t believe Lexus aren’t doing more to protect their customers. I spoke to the local Lexus dealer this morning who told me that this is becoming more and more common and you can see from other forums that this has been a know problem for months. Yet Lexus still don’t have any catlocs available for any of their models. If your going to use parts with precious metals, why haven’t you put measures in place to secure them and stop them from being stolen in first place! It’s like walking around the underground with your phone hanging out your back pocket, your just asking for trouble.
Also the quote I got was Over £1000 for parts and labour. Is this £750 deal only available for RX400h models or do other models qualify? The dealer has no idea of any offers available.

    1. Hi there,

Thanks for contacting us. We are so sorry you have been impacted by this crime. Please be aware that costs may vary depending on the extent of any damage that may have been caused as the catalytic converter was removed.

In order to help you further, we will email you directly so that we can put you in touch with our customer relations team.

      Thanks.

  27. I had mine stolen in september and just had it replaced today. However my dealer was not aware of the £750 and they charged me £800. they said Lexus charged almost £750 for the part and they only put £60 for labour. As my insurance wouldn’t sort it out due to delay, I paid it at my own expense. Can I get a refund £50?
Also it is still not secure and risk getting stolen again. Is Lexus doing something to get these secured….

  28. Why is it taking customers becoming victims for words about this to get out. What is Lexus doing to help customers who are now victims and continue to be vulnerable to repetitive attacks. I have just been told I will loose my NCB after paying an excess of £400 for being a victim of theft. Oh I also have to source for a replacement because I chose a Lexus for peace of mind. I don’t see no peace of mind if I am driving around with a precious metal underneath my car. So my family and I do not have a car for the Christmas period. We do not even know when we can get our hands on a CAT or how long before it gets stolen again. This, is devastating!😣

  29. Ok it appears that I original post wasn’t posted. I had my CAT stolen several days ago -2009 RX400h – it’s been nothing short of a nightmare ever since. I phoned lexus – twickenham to speak with a David Biscoe – who hasn’t returned my call…customer are manager – just to shed some light on what I am supposed to do – we have one car – rely on this one car – and have been severely let down by Lexus.

    Came across this chat ..

No parts – no valid responses from the service / parts department apart from we have no dates / no information / no advice?! This should normally have been part of a recall…..Lexus had advance info on this and refused to write to all concerned..hence all your responses above…

As your customer relations manager in twickenham is not calling back, can I be put in touch with someone offering further advice?

  30. I had my Cat stolen today from my CT200 in broad daylight parked on a suburban street. The car alarm even went off and it still did not deter the thieves. I also have an RX400h that I am now very worried about. I will phone around tomorrow to see what can be done, however after reading all of these posts I do not have a lot of hope or faith in any of the process. What to do. Total despair. I have only had the car a few months and love it, but this is put a real dampener on it. Lexus please help.

  31. I’ve just been made aware by my sister that someone has cut-off and stolen her cat converter on her 2009 rx400h hybrid overnight! She is shocked and appalled considering she had it service by Lexus in May and was not made aware of how vulnerable the car was to such a crime! She purchased the Lexus due to its known reliability and customer care so you can imaging how disappointed she is when this known issue was not flagged to her at her last visit to the dealership?! She still trying to process the fact she’s been a victim of such a crime hence who do I need to contact in Lexus to get her car back on the road???

  32. Looks like I might have been done as well. Had parked outside my surgery for 2 hours. On return loud noise from under the car. Have called RAC, but was browsing the net and found this thread.
Can I drive home with the catalytic converter missing. RAC saying wait time is 3-4 hours.
I presume, once they confirmed the frustration will be to have it repaired. Does insurance cover it

    1. Hi Munir,

  33. We’ve own a 2006 RX400h for a few years now and we couldn’t be any happier with it. At least until last August when the catalytic was stolen from it. Fortunately our insurance company covered the cost of the repair, although we had to wait until more than 2 months until last week to get the car repaired. And hardly a week after the catalytic converter has been stolen once again – in fact just this morning – the very first time we have taken that car out of the garage.

Again it seems that our insurance company will be covering the cost but we will have to wait months again to have the car fixed ( and god knows what our premium will be next year).

To be honest once we get it back I will be scared of taking it anywhere, lit, dark, covered by cctv or not. Not sure what I am asking for here, but right now I am very frustrated, and I think Lexus should be doing more to help us.

I’m very seriously thinking of selling the car if there is anyone interested in buying this type of car at the moment, my first option have always been another Lexus but I am now looking at safer options. In the meantime, what can I do my car safe once I get it back? Looking at this forum I can’t see the situation improving at all before we get the car back.

  34. I had my cat stolen from rx 400h in October. Needed to walt 2 months for a new one. Stolen in broad daylight within 24h. There’s no way I will stick with this model.
Is the cat on a 450h in the same physical position?

  35. Hy, my Lexus rx400h was done today at the front door of B&Q. It didn’t take them minutes as they cut it off at 2 p.m. when loads of people were going in and out. I can’t believe they have done it so quick. Is this £750 valid for Lexus Swindon as well?? They made no damage whatsoever…there are 2 clean cuts on the exhaust and the cat. converter is missing. It s a shame I can’t attach the photos to my comment!

  38. So after getting my car back for 2 weeks after having the original cat stolen, it has just been stolen again! What more can I do? I’m parking it in front of every cctv camera available! Hurry up Lexus! We need a solution!

  39. I had my stolen too in September. After waiting three months, on the same day I brought the car home within less than 24 hours it was stolen again. After having no claim with my insurance now I have lost two years! I am so frustrated considering I have been driving Lexus cars for few decades now. Unfortunately I am so upset I have no other option but to buy some German car as a replacement! My car now is still in garage but to be honest I really don’t want to have it back as it will only get stolen again so I have to sell it somehow for few pound if I am lucky. It is not Lexus fault but unless you find protection I am out of your life for good, such a shame though!

    1. Hello. Thank you for contacting us on Friday and apologies for the delayed reply. We are very sorry to hear that your vehicle was targeted by thieves and understand the frustration this must be causing. The automotive industry is very concerned with the recent sharp rise in the organised theft of catalytic converters from vehicles in the UK by criminal gangs. Our first priority is to do all we can to support our customers who have been victims of this crime. If you wish to raise this with our Customer Relations Team, you can use this link: https://fal.cn/35K1W Thank you.

  40. Today discovered my RX400h had been targeted for its catalytic converter, stuffed our plans for Christmas and New Year. More concerning though is reading through the above comments seems like we’re now in a pretty poor situation even if I could get it fixed within the next two months, it’s as vulnerable as it was before and thieves know where our Lexus is so likely be back again! Surprised there was no word of warning from Lexus as to the problem nor notice given of the repair deal. Please can you let me know the process ford getting it sorted asap – my local Lexus dealer is in Twickenham and seems they’ve gone to ground according to other commentators on here so an alternative would be appreciated.

      1. I’ll be in touch with your Customer Relations Team but for the sake of public information, can you confirm how long it will be before Lexus deliver a real solution for their customers rather than supporting the insurance companies and garage owners who in effect are repairing the same cars over and over again? Currently the lower cost of parts is of benefit only to the insurance company as I still have to pay the £450 excess charge and lost my no claims discount. RX400h owners are stuffed without a realistic solution and given how long this issue has been known, it seems to be a very low priority for Lexus. No matter how good the cars may be, they are currently worthless because of the unpredictability of keeping it on the road long enough before the cc is stolen again. Please with all the technology and design experience you have, give us a practical solution to protect our property and the Lexus brand.

        1. Hi Sharon,

Thanks for your message. We appreciate this may not be the answer you are hoping for, but at this time we can not confirm any specifics. Please be aware we are urgently working to find new technical solutions whilst also supporting all of our customers who have been impacted by this situation. We will be keeping this blog post up to date with any new information we have to share.

          Thanks.

  41. I’ve just gone out to find my cat’s been stolen when the car was parked on my driveway under security lights & CCTV. I can’t wait to find out how much this is going to cost. The repair price seems to be going up & up. I’m guessing this will become a regular event if it’s that quick & easy to complete.

  42. I am a owner of a Rx400 and I was targeted by criminal what can I do to protect my car from thief can the converter replace with a modern one that is less attractive to thief ?

  43. I asked Lexus about the 2020 RX450H. I was told that there should not be a problem as the catalytic convertor on this model only contains 14% of the valuable metals that is found in the RX400

  44. My catalytic converter was stolen in a retail park whilst I popped into the shop for less than 20 minutes yesterday. Car was bought to help my disabled mum, now I’m hit with claiming on MY insurance paying the excess out of MY pocket, whist these thieves get away with it as no-one gets prosecuted. Apparently my wait is going to be 3-5 months! Lexus I agree with many posts above, what you doing to help your customers? You should be recalling the affected cars and fitting some sort of mechanism to prevent this from happening at your cost. Innocent people trying to drive more environmentally friendly cars only to be left stranded when these scumbags target you. I’ve been told that even when you get a replacement catalyst converter, it will just get stolen once again, so what is the answer Lexus?

Great new year, thanks for targeting the vulnerable!
