Formula One Champion Alan Jones Praises New IS
Former Formula One world champion Alan Jones has given the new generation Lexus IS his seal of approval, saying it has “moved the goalposts” for vehicle dynamics in its class.
The twelve-time Grand Prix winner and Lexus ambassador put the new IS saloon through a series of tests at Sydney Motor Sport Park ahead of its launch, and said that the stiffened body, new electric power steering system and enhanced suspension made the IS an even better driver’s car.
“The improvements are clear to see at all speeds,” Jones said. “It’s a lot stiffer, so it instantly provides more reward to the driver with excellent body control. In Formula One you make the chassis as stiff as possible and then let the suspension do all the work. That’s true of the IS too but fortunately the suspension is also fantastic, offering a lot of grip without affecting ride comfort.”
The new IS body shell features adhesive bonding for the first time which, combined with laser screw welding, provides high overall rigidity. The body is 10kg lighter thanks to the use of high-tensile steel and aluminium. It also has upgraded suspension across all grades, including revised front double wishbones and new multilink rear suspension to provide improved grip and stability.
Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) (available on F Sport models) precisely controls damping force of the front and rear shock absorbers in response to different driving conditions and surfaces, and have exclusive suspension and steering tune to reflect the grade’s sporting intentions.
Jones added that IS’s allure went beyond its enhanced dynamic potential, paying tribute to its enhanced L-Finesse styling with signature spindle grille and the introduction of a hybrid model.
“I was very pleasantly surprised by the look of the car for one thing,” Jones said, “but also the new interior and IS 300h hybrid model, which not only provides a great drive but amazing fuel economy as well”.
The IS 300h will produce the lowest CO2 emissions of of all its luxury rivals with 99g/km while achieving economy of up to 65.7mpg.
Jones’ endorsement is a clear validation of the comprehensive development put in place to create the new IS.
