With a fourth full hybrid set to join the range very soon, Lexus is leading the way with hybrid technology in the automotive industry. But what happens when you need to swap the open road for open skies?

One company that’s answering that question is Pipistrel. The Slovenian based aeronautical manufacturer produces the world’s most advanced light aircraft, known as ultralights or Personal Air Vehicles (PAVs).

In 2008, Pipistrel won a $100,000 NASA prize for the world’s best overall PAV and plans are now underway to build a four-seat hybrid aircraft.

Rod Mackenzie travelled several hundred miles in a RX 450h to find out more about Pipistrel and its founder, aeronautical innovator and RX 400h owner, Ivo Boscarol.
